The new Ultra HD (4K) video standard is also a hot topic for the microscopy community!

Over the past months, 4K has become the new standard in video resolution for DSLRs and system cameras. 4K provides four times as many pixels as Full HD resolution, which means that even smaller structures can be resolved in high precision. Modern system cameras are extremely powerful, suitable for universal applications and offer a competitive price-performance ratio.

Just a few years ago, Ultra HD camera systems were prohibitively expensive and thus used mainly by professional photographers. RED, a company known for its high-end movie cameras, made a pioneering step and launched a video camera with 4K and 6K shooting capability and an interchangeable lens system. Due to the overwhelming success of this technology, other established camera manufacturers joined the bandwagon and started to develop similar systems.

Sony soon launched several interesting system cameras equipped with a full-frame sensor and integrated 4K video standard, such as the Sony Alpha 7R II, Sony Alpha 7R III or Sony Alpha 9. These cameras are highly popular and carry a price tag of around EUR 2,000 to EUR 3,000. Their excellent image quality also makes them a good choice for microscopy applications. The Lumix DC-GH5 is Panasonic’s, the D850 Nikon's model that offers 4K video recording.

The following popular cameras are available in the mid-tier price range between EUR 500 and EUR 1,000: Sony Alpha 6500 and Canon EOS M50. 

We offer adapter solutions that work with almost all DSLRs and system cameras. Thanks to their modular design which facilitates maximum flexibility, our products are suitable for a wide variety of microscopes. The camera can be attached to the phototube (as shown above) or the eyepiece tube of the microscope:

The cameras can be used with a high degree of flexibility, with or without a computer:

• direct framing of the Live View image on a large 4K screen
• direct recording of the video sequence on the memory card of the camera
• remote control from a computer in Live View (e.g. using the Canon Utility software) 
• wireless control from a smartphone/ tablet via app (e.g. Canon Camera Connect or Sony PlayMemories Mobile)
