Zeiss Axio Imager 2: digital photomicrography at the highest level

The Carl Zeiss Axio Imager 2 research microscope was developed to satisfy the requirements of a comprehensive range of applications, from simple observation and image acquisition to highly complex analyses. Thanks to six different stand versions and a wide variety of system components, the instrument offers enormous flexibility.

With the help of our LM digital adapters, users can attach all current DSLR and system cameras to the Axio Imager 2 quickly and easily. This combination enables the use of state-of-the-art camera technology to achieve exceptional digital photographic documentation.

The Axio Imager 2 features the IC2S transmitted beam path newly developed by Zeiss. That unique component, based on optimisation of the proven ICS Infinity Optics, provides uniform illumination. As a result, even at low magnifications and large working distances considerably better resolution and contrast can be achieved. In terms of photomicrography, this is certainly a remarkable innovation. Particularly in digital imaging, optimised DIC or DIC + fluorescence imaging renders complex shading correction methods obsolete. The motorised DIC turret (up to 10 positions), combined with proven high-performance Zeiss objectives, delivers brilliant imaging results.

For photomicrographers passionate about their area of expertise, Zeiss offers an extensive array of binocular phototubes:

As an alternative to conventional halogen light, LED illumination is available for either Koehler or Fixed Koehler illumination. Further highlights include a motorised reflector turret (even for samples with extremely weak fluorescence), motorised diaphragms for better reproducibility and high efficiency filters for fluorescence applications.

In its different configurations, the Zeiss Axio Imager 2 is suitable for a broad range of medical research disciplines, from pathology and human genetics to histology, cell biology, developmental biology and neurobiology. Since this microscope is also used in demanding experiments and lengthy working sessions, Zeiss spared no effort to provide ergonomic comfort (such as the conveniently arranged control buttons, exchangeable fine drive and individually positionable control panel) and stability (the instrument’s key elements are decoupled from the remainder of the stand).

Fitting the microscope to digital single-lens reflex (DSLR), mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras (MILC ), digital single-lens mirrorless (DSLM) or C-mount cameras is easy with our LM digital SLR adapters, which feature a plan achromatic optical system. Our products make it possible to capture top-quality microscope images. To help you select the adapter that is right for your camera, we have set up an online configurator on our website. You can also email us – ideally with attached photographs of your microscope.

Modern DSLR and single-lens mirrorless (DSLM) offer the latest technology and are generally very well suited for microscopy applications. Most of them can be controlled remotely via PC/Mac. Because of their high sales volumes, they offer an excellent price/performance ratio compared to special-purpose microscope cameras.

Features of top DSLR and single-lens mirrorless cameras (DSLM):
- Large, powerful full-frame sensors (36 x 24 mm)
- Sensor resolution of 61 megapixels or 240 megapixels with Pixel Shift technology
- High light sensitivity (ISO 400,000+)
- Extensive dynamic range (up to 15 aperture stops/f-stops)
- Short exposure times (1/8000 second) up to 1/32,000 seconds using the digital shutter
- 4K Ultra HD  or 8K Ultra HD video function
- Live video capture on external monitors in ultra HD quality

In most cases, these cameras are significantly more powerful than microscope cameras with smaller sensors (1/2" or 2/3"). On our website you will find our current camera recommendations and a camera ranking which is specifically tailored to microscopy applications.
